Biografía

  • Jo Johnson creates meditative electronic and electro-acoustic music with intense emotion. Her releases include Weaving (Further Records), The Wave Ahead (Mysteries of the Deep) and The Serpentine Path (Going In).
Jo Johnson's musical path has been serpentine. In the 90s, she played guitar with the punk band Huggy Bear, who were inspired by and aligned with the riot grrrl and queercore punk movements. Huggy Bear toured with Bikini Kill the UK and supported Sonic Youth, playing across Europe, Japan and the US. In the 2000s Jo organised underground techno parties with Bleep43 and founded the crew’s record label, Bleep43 Recordings, releasing two EPs with music by Detroit’s DJ Stingray, Mariska, ERP (aka Convextion), Plant43, Bea Brennan (aka Orphan) and herself. In the 2010s Jo began releasing meditative, minimalist music influenced in large part by the work of Alice Coltrane, Laurie Spiegel, Pauline Oliveros, Bjork, Don Cherry, Drexciya, Autechre and Robert Hood. In 2015 Bleep43 began a series of 'horizontal' events dedicated to deep listening, providing a platform for artists to play outside the parameters of a conventional clubbing environment. These events are set in a number of unusual venues, ranging from 18th century church crypts, former bath houses and tunnels under the Thames river. Their guests have included debut UK shows from Sarah Davachi, Jonathan Fitoussi, Bana Haffar, The Transcendence Orchestra and Imaginary Softwoods and performances from Imaginary Softwoods, Ana Quiroga, Loula Yorke. Jo Johnson and other Bleep43 crew members, including Bea Brennan and Plant43, make regular appearances. Jo Johnson’s debut solo album, Weaving, was released on Further Records in 2014 and has been called a modern classic. Since then she has released The Serpentine Path on Going In (a sub-label of The Bunker); The Wave Ahead on Mysteries of the Deep and self-released EPs, Knowledge of the Possible and The Windmill on the Hill. She has contributed tracks to a number of compilations, including Partials II and III (Frequency Domain), Less Popular than Cats (Verdant) and Tenements (Apartment). During the pandemic, she began collaborating remotely with pianist and composer Hilary Robinson and together they released Session One, a live album of manipulated piano and synthesis, on 9128.live (a sub-label of A Strangely Isolated Place) and performed at Daylight Music with Xenia Pestova Bennett and Karlheinz Essl, and Sarah Angliss. The duo have a self-released EP, Antenna Echoes, available on Bandcamp.
