Roberto Duran (aka Kooks) discovered his passion for house music by late 90’s. Kooks started hanging out at local clubs, bars and parties as any other clubber, a few time later he started frequently going to the local club “Regina 51”, one of the first (maybe the first) places to host regular house djs spinning every weekend in San Jose, some time later, he met Regina's owner and then started helping him out at this little club. At Regina, Kooks began to develope his love and passion for house music, also he had the chance to met many people involved in the small costa rican dance scene. Around 1999, Kooks started his own web portal (clubbingculture.com) to promote Costa Rican electronic dance music, the project was a total success and had the support of the most important clubs and promoters in the country. The fact of been constantly in touch with this people helped him started promoting parties for producers like Contacto, Producciones Espaciales and Promotion, some of the biggest promoters around early 2000's. A few time later and with a lot of work, ClubbingCulture (Kooks little baby) became the most important website to promote renamed parties in the country. By 2004 he joined the staff of Club Vertigo, the greatest club in San Jose (and Central America), there he started taking care of some part of marketing and events promotion; working at Vertigo, he had the chance to watch closer international dj’s and producers such as Dubfire, Sander Kleinenberg, Lee Burridge, Danny Howells, Sultan, Junkie XL, and many other people that influenced his taste for music. 2006 was the year that saw Kooks start spinning his first records, the fact of been deep into the local scene and his passion for house music made him get interested in spinning music as many of his friends, so got his first couple of turntables and start spining house vinyls, a few time later he started spining music at some local spots. His influences goes from chill out, jazz, disco and even rock and punk, also from roll models like djs & producers such as Sultan, Beckers, D’Nox, Sander Kleinenberg, Deadmau5, Adam Freeland, James Lavelle, Hybrid and several others great people in the industry. Around 2007, Kooks was invited by SoundLab (DJ Mag radio show at ProtonRadio.com) to do an exclusive set to broadcast at Proton Radio; the show was a total success and because of this good work he was invited to do some more sets in 2007 and 2008. By 2008 Kooks formed the collective for ClubbingCulture and joined it along with other friend djs like Javier Portilla, Nimrod, Dave Charpentier, Fran Soto and Andres Solano. Kooks dj sets are a mixed of many kinds of music, his sets doesn’t have an specific genre or sound, it goes from house to progressive to tech house to techno and even touching sometimes the lines of break beats and rock making his sets a total experience with unpredictable great music turns, “if it sounds good, it will work”.
