- Laurence is a believer and a creator, a wild thing and a chameleon. And she loves making music.It's brave to resist the crowd's lust for a big drop or obvious track, but that's what Laurence Matte does when she casts a spell on the dance floor on her own terms. She finds creative joy in contrasts. She explores the unexpected, makes people dance to music they don't know, and conjures familiar feelings with unfamiliar sounds. Her long and winding DJ sets are fluid and responsive trips that are often slow-burning. Genres become blurred as she threads together steamy jungle dubs, psyched-out and percussive grooves and loose-limed rhythms that have transfixed crowds everywhere from Piknic Électronik in her native Montréal to Heart in Ibiza, Art With Me in Tulum and Teksupport in New York. As a producer, Laurence Matte is gaining musical maturity and a fully formed sound that is in sync with her subversive DJ sets. She has released on Piknic Électronik Montréal, Ritmo Fatale where 'Men In Orbit' showcased her knack for hypnotic grooves with a synth-heavy cosmic twist, and a full EP on whypepeopledance that spans slow-motion electro depths, ambient sci-fi electronics and tripped out dark disco chug. "I search for a feeling or something that makes me tick," she says. That open mind and desire to experiment in the niches in between traditional genres is what stands Laurence Matte apart. Her ability to play slow but with great tension is second to none. She is adept at going long, controlling an overarching narrative, and ramping things up one tune at a time, always with a compelling underlying groove and sense of musical adventure that is beguiling and beautiful.
