Biografía

  • Award winning vocalist/producer, Marissa Guzman was born in LA but raised in the Detroit suburbs with a father on Motown Records, Eddie Guzman of Rare Earth. At 10 years old, the band would call their kids on stage to sing in front of thousands of fans...
Although it took Marissa a few years after college and working in the corporate world to finally realize she had to pursue music wholeheartedly, she had a life changing revelation after a spiritual retreat in 2009 to quit her successful career in marketing to focus on being a musician full time. Marissa learned how to produce, write, record and engineer her own vocals, and she released her debut album, "Joy Road" on the label that the legendary Derrick May helped her create, Juicy Lucy Records. In 2011 her first single from the album, "Time To Go," was remixed by South Africa's famous DJ/ producer, Black Coffee, and his remix went straight to number one on Traxsource. It also beat Rihanna's "We Found Love" in the South African Top 40 charts. In 2012 the song was nominated for "Remix of the Year" at the SAMAs (South Africa's version of the GRAMMYs), and in 2013 "Time To Go" was part of the album "Africa Rising," which won "Best Dance Album" of the year. 2014 proved to be another successful year for Marissa since her song with Cuebur, "No Doubt," was number one on London's "BBC Radio One Extra" show for two weeks in a row, and the Shlomi Aber remix was also played on the legendary Pete Tong's radio show. In 2015, Marissa entered her original production of 'Time To Go' in the World Wide Music Contest, and she won the grand prize of 10,000 euros, beating hundreds of applicants. Marissa later found out that one of the judges was the original guitar player for the band 'The Police.' And although Marissa took a 5 year break from production while touring heavily in Europe and South Africa, she decided to give it another go after winning such a prestigious award from the WWMC. Since then, she has also been teaching herself how to play the keys so she can bring a whole new element to her live set. Marissa also has had 2 very successful collaborations ('Fifth Moon' and 'Like A Feather'), with her longtime friend, Kerri Chandler, whom she performed live with at the Movement Electronic Music Festival in 2015. Marissa's story is very similar to Rodriguez in the movie "Searching for Sugarman," except 40 years later: A musician from Detroit gets famous in South Africa. Ironically, Rodriguez was a neighbor of Eddie Guzman's in Detroit and ran in the same musician circle. Marissa has headlined countless festivals in South Africa, with her biggest show being "Africa Rising" in Durban, and her 2nd largest audience was in her hometown of Detroit, when she headlined Dalley in the Alley in 2016. While Marissa definitely blossomed as an artist in San Francisco, she recently decided to move back to her hometown of Detroit to be closer to her family and finish producing a series of EPs to be released on her label Juicy Lucy in 2019. She also has a highly inspiring and very true story to share of how she turned her life around after a series of very unfortunate events knocked her down (almost to the point of no return). She wants to inspire other artists and share what worked for her with hopes to give new artists hope and encourage them to stay on their chosen paths of creativity and enlightenment. Stay tuned! The future looks bright for this multi-talented songbird.
