DJ and producer Michelle Owen composes music filled with vibrancy and richness, making her one of the most admired artists in house today, releasing records on respected labels Moodmusic, Exploited, Dirt Crew and more. With a sound that is ripe with soul and depth, it’s no surprise that this talented powerhouse has received praises from the likes of Chez Damier, Graeme Park, Ashley Beedle, Ian Pooley, Sasse, DJ T and was listed as “One To Watch” in 2012 by Mixmag Magazine. She continually moves crowds from city to city, playing venues and events such as Panorama Bar (Berlin), the Snowbombing Festival (Austria), 360 Bar (Dubai), hosting her own quarterly event at Watergate (Berlin) and performing regularly as a guest at Flux (UK) events. Her musical calling began as a teenager playing electric guitar in her native Sydney, Australia. Growing up on a healthy dose of grunge and Hip-Hop, she soon acquired the skills as a sound engineer while still in High School, working on various projects in one of the city’s big studios. However, it was a 1999 New Year’s Eve performance by Danny Tenaglia that helped to spark a new love for house music. Owen saved up to buy a pair of turntables and from that point on, there was no looking back. Through hard work and determination, she quickly became a main fixture in Sydney, establishing residencies in popular clubs such as Yu, Sounds on Sunday, Chinese Laundry, Tank and Home. Her popularity only increased with the hosting of a weekly show on Rhythm FM, now Kiss FM as well as hosting a slot with Australia’s Kid Kenobi, FBI Radio. Although successful in Sydney, Michelle Owen decided that it was time to spread her wings after spending a holiday in the party capital, Ibiza. In 2007, she moved to the island sharpening her production skills and spinning in the Coco Loco room at Manumission. It was then off to London where she worked with music giant Ben Watt at Buzzin Fly Records. After being offered a job to join Beatport, it was time to lay foundation in Berlin, where she currently resides. Michelle has gone on to do work with Native Instruments and now runs her own music product management company. Her first collaborative record “What’s In A Name?” with James Flavour was released in 2010 on the Dirt Crew label. The funky, jazzy feel good track made way for Michelle’s impressive debut solo work “Swing It” on Lost My Dog. The EP, which featured the upbeat “Dee & Deaf”, displayed her versatility as a producer to go between various ranges of house. The sexy follow up single “Strange Days” released though Baker Street Recordings, received stark reviews with her stellar 2011 track “Perchance To Dream” on Mood Music, solidifying her ability to perfect the deep house sound. The single which included remixes by Chicago house legend Chez Damier, was rated 8 out of 10 by Mixmag Magazine with industry heavyweights such as Luke Solomon, Shonky, Deetron, Ewan Pearson and loads more around the globe all supporting the tune. “Perchance To Dream” climbed to the top of the charts on Beatport and Traxsource. In 2012 Michelle Owen launched her lifestyle website Almost Real, a platform for music, art, board culture and innovation as well as global project building. The “It’s Almost Night” event series is an extension merging the sounds of Hip-Hop, jazz, funk and R&B. Always actively moving forward, the multi-dimensional artist hasn’t slowed down one bit. Her flawless, deep house remix of Rafa Santos’ “Breaking You” was released on the Spanish label Great Plan in early 2013, with her single “What Say You?” delivered on Exploited. She was also recruited to mix Moodmusic’s latest “Retake Two” compilation. If consistency and talent are the desirable traits of longevity, then Michelle Owen’s name is firmly cemented in the industry and this only a sample of what is yet to come. By Art Jefferson
