- Nigel Perera is a Sri Lankan based DJ, producer and visual artist heavily inspired by funk, jazz and hip hop as well as many of the more restrained sub-genres of electronic music.Nigel Perera is a Sri Lankan based DJ, producer and visual artist heavily inspired by funk, jazz and hip hop as well as many of the more restrained sub-genres of electronic music. Being first exposed to the emerging electronic music scene in Colombo in 2014, Nigel started developing and refining his sound as a DJ, experimenting with a mix of hip-hop, funk, house and techno. Due to his keen interest in the field of turntablism, Nigel’s sets are laced with cuts and chops, placing much emphasis on wobbly breaks and broken beats. In 2015, Nigel started producing music, releasing his debut EP on ‘Jambutek Recordings’ the following year. Apart from numerous tracks and releases for the local imprint he has also been signed to Zurich’s experimental label ‘Wondermachine Music’, Delhi based ‘Wind Horse Records’, ‘Frucht’ in Berlin, ‘Berberis’ and ‘Pleasure In Mind Records’. Nigel is comfortable with a number of styles in his productions deeply infuenced -by jazz & funk with a minimal/micro aesthetic. His compositions combine contemporary electronic music with stylistic elements from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Since 2017, Nigel has been working closely with Jambutek Recordings founder, Asvajit, helping to run the label, recruiting new artists and also working on visual aspects. Bridging sonic & visual art has been an ongoing interest of Nigel’s, having worked at the only experiential design studio in Sri Lanka, Cyber Illusions, he has been involved with many audio/visual projects and installations. He also founded his own music collective ‘Control Freq’ and works with the Goethe-Institut & Border Movement creating visual content for live shows.
