Biografía

  • Paul Boex is a Dutch DJ and electronic music producer based in Utrecht (NL). Paul is one half of the duo of Abstract Division and he is the founder / owner of the record label Dynamic Reflection and its sublabel, The Nursery.
Paul was born in a small Dutch village called Sleeuwijk. He started listening to hip-hop and techno in his mid-teens and as a young adult, he bought himself a couple of turntables and started developing his DJ skills. During his studies, he began working for the Rotterdam-based record distributor Triple Vision, where he was exposed to a lot of quality music and he soon got interested in the production part as well. He took inspiration from artists like Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, James Ruskin, Surgeon, Oscar Mulero, Planetary Assault Systems, Function, Dettman and Klock, Shed, Autechre and Donnacha Costello. His first musical collaboration as a duo was with Marco Rane under the alias 'Dynamo'. The name was reflecting to the sound they were trying to produce: energetic and loaded with power. Together they have released on labels like Arms, Aftertaste Recordings and Naked Lunch. In the meanwhile, Paul finished his studies and wanting to stay in the music industry, he started working as a booker for a well-known underground venue in Utrecht called 'Poema'. Inspired by seeing other artists at Triple Vision, in 2008, at the age of 23, Paul decided to set up his own label he named 'Dynamic Reflection'. He started releasing music on his own label, but he described the upcoming years as a very challenging period of his life, because both him and his label were relatively unknown to the scene at that time. However, Paul stayed determined and was working hard. He started making a name for himself in the scene as the initiator of the prominent 'Mental Evolution' event series in Holland which was known for being committed to deep, pure and hypnotic techno. The next important step in his music career was when he met Joton (the label founder of 'New Rhythmic') in 2007. They shared the same vision and passion for music which created a special bond between the two of them. This friendship resulted in a new artistic collaboration. They came up with a groundbreaking idea of playing their sets on 4 decks, 2 mixers + FX and after some successful nights, they've decided to make it into an exclusive project. In 2009, Paul booked Dave Miller for an event at 'Poema' as a solo act. Paul was also a fan of Dave's collaborative productions with Damian Keane (Miller & Keane) and given his multiple positive past experiences of musical partnerships with other artists, he asked Dave whether he would be interested in working together. The very first track they produced was signed and released not so much later on the label Labyrnth. After this unexpected success, they decided to try dj-ing together. Their sets were received quite well by the Dutch audience and so they decided to make a lasting act out of it under the alias 'Abstract Division'. Against all the challenges throughout the years, Paul stayed committed to his goals and managed to establish a name for himself within the scene. In 2018, his label celebrated its 10-year anniversary with a very special, project including 5 EPs called 'Continuum', featuring artists like Blawan, Steffi, Oscar Mulero, Donato Dozzy and Mike Parker. Today, next to his DJ and producer career, Paul is best known for being the booker of Club Perron and Annabel in Rotterdam and he is the one fixing the line-ups for the DECODE event series which is hosted by Abstract Division. Until today, Dave and Paul live in two different cities in Holland. They produce their tracks with their personal computers being connected to each other in Ableton. The duo also prepares for their sets separately from each other and play b2b at every event where they spontaneously merge their playlists, pouring a constant flow of energetic synths, soundscapes, drones and bass-lines onto the dance floor. A constantly evolving story, told by two different personalities, but with a shared vision. • www.souncloud.com/paul-boex • www.facebook.com/paulboex • www.twitter.com/paulboex
