Born and raised in Cadiz in southwestern Spain, Juan Valverde aka Perla takes his musical alias from his long time nickname. A music aficionado since a tender age, he got into modern electronic music at the turn of the century, first collecting favourites on vinyl. Shortly thereafter, upon discovering the underground house scene in Sevilla, he bought a pair of decks just to play the records in his burgeoning collection. In 2003, Perla and some friends started throwing underground parties under the collective name DanceUsted (You dance!) trying to overcome the the lack of real techno in the Sevilla scene. In 2004 he moved to London and fell in love with the city's thriving music scene, eventually DJing at the infamous late Sunday parties in London's East End, Shoreditch. Back in Spain, as DanceUsted parties continued to flourish, he started producing music and eventually playing live PAs armed with a computer and a groovebox. In 2006, Perla moved to San Francisco, where he settled into his first proper studio and started producing, influenced by American techno and house. His music blends the melodic sensibilities of Prosumer or Minilogue with the warm instrumentation evocative of San Francisco stalwarts Broker/Dealer. Subsuming the occasional flourish, while building elaborate layers of multivariate, ever-changing sounds, his arrangments have a dynamism that borders on this side of frenetic but with a rare subtleness and depth. Recently, he has been doing live PAs and DJ sets in San Francisco at parties such as Killswitch and FaktionSF, as well as webradio broadcasts on DEFSF Radio Integrated.
