- POP-3 is an ever evolving organic multimedia project born from the symbiotic art-affair between video artist, movie-maker, writer, photographer and painter t.k. kim and the musician, producer and analog synth collector Merlin Monroe.From the very beginning, it was clear that POP-3 would not only never settle for making typical club or even pop music, but also that their art form would always trample on and out step any rigid categorization. So over time, through the permanent culture-shock paired with skillful maneuvers, they have managed to distill their very own golden formula-non-formula, which seamlessly blends music, poetry, dance, video and audio installations, photography and painting - the highbrow as well as the profane. Their unique approach has a premeditated advantage of course - their performances are designed to be equally as effective when presented in a club, as in a gallery or an art museum. The POP-3 creative process is holographic. A movie collage could easily inspire a song, a song based on a painting could find its way into a movie, a synth line plucked from one of Merlin's many vintage machines could become a poem or an installation. It just might take a pinch of each to then eventually end up as a photo presented at an exhibit or in a book. Since its inception, the project has been steadily oscillating between Switzerland and France - the prospect of having two homes and operating from two different locations with radically opposing energies guarantee a steady source of inspiration for the creative minds behind POP-3. This constant movement between extremes is well documented in their vast body of work and readily audible in their musical compositions. A single POP-3 record can easily jump from the soothing sound of a Swiss winter cool, converted into electronic bleeps and textures of course, into the high energy bass driven raucousness of a Parisian club - and it does so without any loss of tension and without creating a feeling of discord.
