Biografía

  • The highs and lows of a producer and dj in the chocolate mountains of the 21 century.
Ripperton: The Chameleon of Electronic Music Raphael "Ripperton" Gros, a true Swiss electronic music chameleon, has been captivating audiences with his eclectic sound for over two decades. Growing up on the beats of Tony Humphries, Djaimin, and Kid Bachelor, and working at the legendary Lausanne record shop Tracks, Ripperton was immersed in the world of vinyl from an early age. His journey into DJing began in the early '90s, and soon after, he started producing music on his MPC3000 and dusty analog synths. His first releases, under the names Soul Merge and Reasons, gained recognition, with Reasons eventually winning the Diesel U Music Award in 2003. This success led to the creation of his first label, Lovearth Records. Ripperton's popularity soared with his side project Lazy Fat People, which was signed to labels like Border Community, Wagon Repair, and Carl Craig's Planet E. Simultaneously, he enjoyed collaborations with fellow Swiss producers Quarion, Van Hai, Agnès, Chaton, Dachshund, Masaya, Crowdpleaser, or Quenum on labels like Sthlm Audio and Plak Records. His solo career also flourished, with releases on major underground labels like Innervisions, Maeve, Systematic, Rekids, Cocoon, Liebe Detail, Connaisseur, and many more. He also delivered over 130 remixes for artists like Laurent Garnier, Ellen Alien, Beanfield, and even the band Radiohead. His versatility and talent caught the attention of renowned DJs like Steve Bug, Maya Jane Cole, Sasha, DJ Koze, James Holden, Joris Voorn, Deetron, and Radioslave, who featured him in their compilations over the years. In 2006, Ripperton launched the well-known underground label Perspectiv Records, and soon after, his beloved Tamed musiq in 2010. This label brought to light fresh talent from Switzerland and around the world, nurturing collaborations with amazing producers like dj Nature, Tobias, Soulphiction, Sebo K, DJ Koze, Matt Karmil, Baikal, and Isolée. His debut album, "Niwa," arrived in 2010, and he followed it up with "A Little Part of Shade" in 2013, both released on Joris Voorn's Green Records. In 2018, Ripperton felt the time was right to let the wind in and experiment with modular and guitar sounds, resulting in the albums "Sight Seeing" and "Contrails" on the Los Angeles-based label ESP Institute. His creativity and dedication were further recognized in 2022 when he received the prestigious Swiss Music Prize alongside the legendary duo Yello. He also collaborated with the photographer Matthieu Gafsou for his exhibition "Vivants" at the Museum of Art in Pully, and will present an orchestral version of his electronic pieces for the prestigious tonhalleLATE – classic meets electronic collaboration with the Zurich Film Festival and the Filmphilharmony. In addition, he plans to relaunch the duo Lazy Fat People with Mirko Loko. Ripperton's career is a testament to his versatility, creativity, and dedication to electronic music. He is a true chameleon, seamlessly blending genres and styles, always pushing the boundaries of sound. With his impressive discography, accolades, and collaborations, Ripperton is firmly established as one of the most influential Swiss DJs and producers of today. Currently, Ripperton is producing with new Swiss talents, showcasing the vibrant and diverse electronic landscape of his homeland.
