Ryota Arai a.k.a O.P.P from Tokushima Prefecture started his career as a DJ/organizer in 1999 then moved to Tokyo to pursue even higher originality creativity and to gain more opportunities. He has held parties in various places such as London, LA, Aus..
O.P.P. (Ryota Arai) is a music producer, event organizer, DJ, and
all-genre record collector based in Tokyo, Japan.
Ryota started his career as a DJ in 1999, at the age of 18, playing
clubs around his home of Tokushima prefecture, in Shikoku. After
graduating high school, he spent 10 months as an exchange student in
Brisbane Australia, where he continued to make music and perform. While
there, Ryota had his first experiences as an event organizer and
resident DJ, and returned to Japan with a fresh desire to discover new
and exciting music.
As it happened, underground favorites DJ 5 who is one of COS/MES was
also based in Tokushima and Hip Hop and House music were still very
prominent in the local music scene when Ryota returned from Australia,
so it wasn't long before he organized his own event at home. The
vibrant hip-hop scene suited his love of break beat and abstract
hip-hop, and he was soon ensconced in the local parties. The events at
which he played averaged an audience of around 200 people, and feeling
confident and satisfied at home, Ryota felt it was time to dig deeper
into obscure musical tastes, so he set out for Tokyo.
Now 20 and having moved to the city, Ryota picked up where he left off
in Tokushima and quickly immersed himself in the local hip-hop scene,
playing his break beats, working on mixing and scratching techniques,
and generally defining his own style.
He soon came across the DJ bar MIST in Koenji, Tokyo, and their
regular event MOSS. The event was hosted by KINKA of KEY OF KNOWLEDGE,
who had made a big splash in the underground scene with the 10 inch
Garden, on popular underground label Sound Channel. Ryota's style fitted right
in, and he became a resident DJ along with FLACTIC and "5" from COS/MES,
with participants such as DAIKEI from O-PARTS, and an audience made up
largely of artists and creators in their own right. This event would
prove pivotal in the forming of O.P.P., and it was at this time that
he began creating his own MPC tracks and started creating original
content. This lead to Ryota including house and techno into his
song selection.
After 2 and a half years of residency at MIST, the bar closed and the
MOSS event ended. Nonetheless, he continued with 4 other resident
spots in town, and made numerous guest DJ appearances both in and out
of Tokyo, including Los Angeles.
While his DJ activities were in full bloom, Ryota was scouted by
COCONUTS DESK EKODA, one of his favorite record stores. The store
hired him as a buyer of not only dance music, but all genres. This
inspired him to release his own mix CD, entitled GARAKUTA, which
incorporated afro-beat, rock, new wave, reggae, calypso, cold funk,
disco and dub. This "genreless" approach made it a hit in the
underground music scene.
As Ryota and his fellow DJ crew were gradually progressing in the
music scene, he was invited to Bangkok Thailand for a guest DJ spot.
There he encountered MAFT SAI's THAI FUNK and quickly imported it to
Japan. He and best friend "56" then set up the regular event in
Bangkok called SUN & MOON.
To this day Ryota continues to take chances and try new things, and
this year he fulfilled a dream by releasing his first mini album
UNKNOWN PLACE. The album is already making waves in Tokyo, as O.P.P.
continues to craft and hone his musical creations.
