Meet Dj Schwa. For years and years he has been stirring the waters of Prague’s underground scene as a DJ, producer and promoter. You might have come across Schwa’s acid infused tracks on his imprint Beef Records and other heavy weights Compost Black, RFR, Flight Recorder, Otake, Steps or you might have pumped into him at experimental rave parties called Komiks. As you can imagine the path that led him here is not a straight line. Michal was born in the mid '80s into a musical family with an apartment right above the legendary ORM studio Prague (founded by Michal’s father Pavel). ORM is a studio where the first Czech electronic music as well as essential pop hits and film scores were produced. In early ‘00s a recording room full of vintage analogue instruments sparked Michal’s love for all things electronic – mainly for hard computer and drum machine programmed beats. Around this time Schwa visits his first techno raves around Prague which initiates obsession with DJing and collecting early acid & trance records. Soon after Michal starts experiments with making music and launches his own label. Around this time Michal also started working as a sound engineer at ORM Studio. Between 2005 and 2012 Michal relocated to Sydney, Australia. At this time, he is already DJing, producing records, travelling and holds residency at Sydney’s legendary after-hour club Spice. In 2012 Michal together with Nick West wrote his debut full length house album Soul Machine under the ''Shades Of Gray” moniker. DJ Mag UK rated Soul Machine in the top 50 albums of 2012 and Shades Of Gray started touring heavily (Australia, Japan, South America and Europe). Around this time Michal is also collaborating with deep house legends such as Ian Pooley, Miguel Migs and Shur-i-kan. In 2015 after relocating to Prague Michal started running warehouse raves Komiks together with local jocks Fatty M and Lumiere. The focus shifts more towards raw techno and acid house. Komiks soon became a respected rave gathering utilising old industrial warehouse spaces on the outskirts of Prague. These locations would get packed with art installations and experimental lighting and ravers can experience real sweaty and a rather surreal atmosphere while being open to all genders, sex, age and politics. Komiks has hosted many legendary acts such as Derrick May, Omar S, Robert Hood, Kink, Marcel Dettmann, Steffi, Bjarki, Bambounou, David August, Tornado Wallace, Palms Trax, San Proper, Moscoman, Vakula... All this led to Michal’s appearance at a Boiler Room Prague with Tommy Four Seven, Anthea, Eva Porating and Fatty M. In 2021 Michal started the WD-40 Trax project with his nephew Jan Poš with focus on rave music and sonical experiments. Their debut 12” is to drop in summer 2021. Through his studio production work, label and parties, Schwa’s music selection grew into a large, passionate and open-minded collection. His passion encompasses all aspects of music ranging from house, tribal to electro, acid, electronica and all the way up to heavy rave music. There are few boundaries.
