“Freedom to express yourself through music is why we all started writing in the first place”
Serge Santiago and rocking dancefloors go hand in hand. As the DJ and producer behind pivotal acts Radio Slave, Waze & Odyssey and Retro/Grade, Serge has earned himself a respected place in the international house music scene. After a period of prolific studio creativity, Serge is focused on getting even more music out to the world. And, working with Irvine Welsh's label, Jack Said What, he has achieved just that. His opening singles from the album ’11:11’ have created hype from across the house music spectrum and radio and DJ support are stacked up behind them.
In the early days of Radio Slave, Serge and Matt Edwards teamed up to create underground club edits of pop records and the scene lapped them up — they achieved almost instant global club and radio support. The pair created a number of seminal edits before developing their own creative paths.
Retro/Grade was a ground-breaking project fronted by Tom Neville and Serge. Backed by Simian Mobile Disco, Boys Noize and Erol Alkan, they were signed by Hacienda legend Mike Pickering to the DeConstruction label. The track ‘Moda’ destroyed the We Love Space Ibiza dancefloor repeatedly., and the single ‘It’s a War’ hasn’t left record boxes and gig sticks 10 years on. Retro/Grade’s tour highlights include touring with Groove Armada and also with Goldfrapp.
When the Waze & Odyssey project kicked off they released on quality labels Southern Fried, Madtech, Tsuba, Dirt Crew, Edible, Relief and Nothing Else Matters. They appeared on the biggest line-ups for 10 years from 2010, maintaining a global tour schedule that included regular slots at Fabric, Elrow and Panorama Bar.
Carving his own path once more, Serge is bubbling with ideas and positivity, “Why now?” people keep asking? Why not if it feels right? with Stompa Phunk being home for Serge, a resident since 1999 he lays everything down on the floor, embracing the movement that Brighton needs. Bringing a sound and a culture that makes the night so special and leaves a mark on the city’s musical landscape. Stompa Phunk continues to smash the south coast underground party scene with Serge at the helm road testing new productions and the floor providing all the energy and feedback he needs.
