Q1:How long have you been in the "scene" here in LA? I discovered the underground electronic scene first with indy rock and electro parties. Slowly i became introduced to a very small intimate scene of techno lovers, by way of Compression, Droid and Droog. I quickly became immersed in the electronic scene and have been going out in La/downtown La and surrounding areas for the past 2 years or so. I was always going to see djs and artists in Europe and San Fran before i was settled in LA. Q2: In your opinion, what's LA's 'edge' in the clubbing scene compared with other US cities like Miami, Detroit, New York? The weather, artists want to come to LA for the sun and "hollywood." We have that driving factor that will bring us the talent, we just have to create a more welcoming scene for them to be heard. The artists i speak to want to come to LA they just feel like our town is a hip hop town, which it is, but we are slowly trying to change that, which i think will happen within the next 2 years. Also, we have new clubs and venues opening up everyday, they are understanding the components of good sound systems, so we have that going for us too, once these venues are up and running it will be amazing to see who comes through los angeles that never has played here before. Q3: When was your first DJ experience & who was playing? Real dj experience, that would be Danny Tenaglia Pacha NYC, 3 years ago. He played from 10pm til 8pm (the following day). I danced the whole time, he is unbelievable. Q4: If given the chance, what artists would you like to work/play with? I would love to collaborate with more female artists and singers, i love the way Little Boots performs with her Tenori-on, i would love to bring that element of visual excitement to dj-ing. Q5: What projects are you currently working on? Continuously working on production, with my partner Skyler under the name SHDWPLAY. We make grungy minimal techno. It has alot of my vocals with a raw underground almost industrial undertone. We also are djing together too, with a mixture ableton, traktor and various synths. Working on a full length album which should be out soon. Avant Punk release is out on Impakt, and Choke My Chord EP w/ the single Dis Vicious will be out on the SF label Blipswitch within the next few weeks. Doing alot of vocal tracks with some international djs as well, including ZOO BRAZIL and Erphun. Keep your eye out for them. Q6: Who are some of your influential artists? Depeche Mode, Franz Ferdinand, Richie Hawtin, Danny Tenaglia and lots of older punk and rock bands, the Zombies, Janes Addiction...so many, too little time. Q7: What are your 'top 5' electronic music tracks of all time? My track selections are ever changing, just like my moods. My top five at the moment are: Dustin Zahn - Analog God (Kyle Geiger remix) Riva Starr, The Doors - The End (Riva Starr Bootleg) Toby Dreher - Pueblo (Heinrichs & Hertenfellner) Hansi Ruting - Opre (Federico Giust remix) Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann - Dawning (Revisted) . -interview by subversive_la (subversivela.com)
