As a producer, audio designer and unifier, Adam Sombionx Nelson has helped shaped the landscape of Chicago’s underground electronic scene for more than three decades. The influence of his Q Studios recording studio and SSS underground collective continues to ripple across the city, while his driving brand of tech house melds shades of electro pop and indie to ignite dance floors every weekend.
Sombionx first garnered notoriety as the founder of Q Studios, which he launched as a Chicago recording studio in the early ‘90s, For two decades, the 2,000-square-foot loft space served as an artistic hub and globally recognized party space featuring premier international DJ talent. While Sombonix continued to move forward musically with tech house releases on Doubledown, Moody and more, it was the community created during the late-night heyday of Q Studios that would shape the future of the SSS collective and leave its most influential mark.
In 2013, the Chicago underground scene was ready for a vibe that was both inclusive and comfortable for everyone—insiders, outsiders, fresh talent, and more. Sombionx answered with SSS, an audio design and production company that hosted some of the most acclaimed and well-attended after-hours parties in the city. Showcasing his events with a custom-designed sound system and top tier underground acts, crowds flocked in droves to an industrial loft space that drew in a new generation of scene-goers while re-inspiring the old.
“The SSS parties, much like the Q Studios events, got people working together and supporting one another in a way that had been lost over the years,” Sombionx says. “The scene is stronger than ever in Chicago, and many credit SSS with cultivating that synergy.”
The SSS collective continues to provide the soundtrack for top events, including SSS Takeover at Wicker Park’s Annex (formerly Red Dog). The label will also release a series of singles and EPs as a result of collaborations with members including Sombionx, Amy Unland, Romasoul, Andy Stroble, Le Sprite, Eric Fenske, Keith Forhman, and more.
The influence of the original Q Studios remains strong in both Sombionx’s productions and SSS. With his original audio/video production company acting as a parent label to the collective, shades of the golden age continue driving his creativity and pushing him to create fresh tech house beats for everyone on the floor.
