Jay is ginger, but don’t hold that against him. He’s also a classically trained producer, DJ and studio engineer, but that’s still not enough to make you care all that much about him now, is it? Maybe some words from fans of his music will help… Recent releases as Teva on ALiVE, for example, have been received with shouts of “really nice” from French funsters dOP, “very strong indeed” from Bristol bad man Eats Everything and “I will definitely be rocking these” from Droog member and Culprit boss, Justin Sloe. Despite its success, Teva is not this man’s first production incarnation. He first surfaced with a debut release on Jim Rivers’ Misfits label back in 2008. It was one lapped up by hungry beat hounds like Dubfire, Hernan Cataneo and Nick Warren, but is one that now seems a distant memory given how far his sound has progressed. As such, 2012 will be all about channelling the hours spent stooped over a piano as a child, the hours spent toiling in a studio at College (when he wasn’t drinking that is) and the hours spent listening to childhood heroes like Groove Armada (whom he devilishly remixed to top the DMC charts) Faithless and Massive Attack. Musicality, then, will be at the root of all he does going forward. Most likely it will be with flourishing South Coast imprint ALiVE as they are one of few modern day labels willing to work with someone of such vivid hair colouring. So too are they the agency who have been happy to take a chance on Jay as a DJ, recently adding him to their roster and bulking up his diary as a result. Furthermore, there is a glut of producers keen to tap into Jay’s skill reserves, often calling upon his services as a studio engineer. He must be doing something right then, because kids don’t suffer fools gladly… And so to some more gritty details: Jay has collaborated with the likes of Andre Crom, has climbed high in Beatport charts with his OFF Recordings EP, has missed many a flight home from Ibiza because of his devotion to partying and even managed to work in Ushuaia’s studios during summer 2011. That same year, so too did he managed to nail a tan – proof, if it were needed, that ginger people can sun themselves with the rest of us. However, providing hair-based prejudice is a thing of the past, support for Jay’s productions has come in from masters like Reboot, Sasha, H.O.S.H, Jozif, M.A.N.D.Y, Solomun and Tom Budden, whilst one can only assume revered clubs like Cable are fans, too, given their booking of this chirpy star in the past. The sounds he mixes together (most recently at events with Sasha, Carl Craig and H.O.S.H) with all the panache of Ainsley Harriott and Heston Blumenthall’s love child take in a touch of tech, a hunk of house and a whole lotta je ne sais quoi… no really, we don’t know where he gets it from but it sure sounds good on the dance floor.
