  • He'd say inconsistent where we'd say experimental. He'd say distracted, not inquisitive. Not artistic, but erratic. Not waving but drowning. But, you'd forgive the boy for an occasional temperament that makes Nick Drake appear eruptively ecstatic. Kenny Atkins spent his teen years in California before returning to London around the time that Big Dada, the Hip Hop wing of independent record label Ninja Tune was setting up. His heavy involvement in what Observer Music Monthly titled "the very best underground hip hop label", appearances on MTV Europe and the Mary Anne Hobbs show, confirm A La Fu as one of our city's finest exports. Indeed, in the decade after Big Dada's inception, Kenny became a resident at the short-lived and much missed GOSH! nights at the iconic Plastic People, as well as supported and shared a stage with the likes of Gil Scott Heron, De La Soul, Afrika Bambatta and Blackalicious. Now a resident in Barcelona we don't get to engage with him as much as we'd like, but we enjoy every minute that we do.
